A Newb’s Look at the Quantum Rise Expansion

by Sam Guss … It seems like in every MMO, there is more negative attention paid to expansions than positive ones, yet statistically expansions usually end up having more players’ active post-expansion than they did pre-expansion. The same goes with Eve Online. From a newb’s perspective, I am excited about the expansion and it’s features and in this article I share why.
Alchemy. Apparently this new feature allows industrialist to take more common minerals and turn them into rarer ones. I am still working up to the point on my industrialist alt to work with these types of minerals, so it is reassuring that at some point I can have access to rarer minerals at lower risk.
The Orca. Malori, my mining and industrialist alt loves this! Pretty soon, Malori will be able to fly Hulks and the step beyond that had planned on going into a Roqual eventually. Now, that the Orca is arriving, it gives Malori another goal in between the Hulk and Roqual – this is a good thing.
Cloaked Industrials. Woot! Having lived in low sec for awhile and no in null sec, I cringe whenever I have to use my industrial to transport stuff, whether I have an escort or not. Now that I will be able to fly cloaked it gives me hope that I might be able to survive more.
Weapon Grouping. I like this idea and makes sense to me. I am surprised that this hadn’t been implemented already to be honest. For myself I plan on using the weapon grouping to deal with various weapons I have outfitted which due to weapon type/ammo being used, have different optimal ranges.
Speed Nerfs. I am not sure how this nerf will affect me directly as I haven’t flown a nano-ship. The web nerf will affect me somewhat though as I am usually a tackler. The jury is still out on this one, and we’ll see how it goes.
Certificates! I absolutely love this implementation. Between this and Eve Mon, it means less dead ends, and more affective skill training!
Medals! One of the biggest things that draw me so much to Eve is how much control the players have in this game. The medals to me are an extension of that; uniqueness, player to player recognition and immersion value all rolled up into one simple thing: a medal.
There are a few other main features in this expansion, but I’ll be honest; as a newb I have no idea how they will affect me or my game play until after I have lived with it for awhile. So I guess we’ll see together how those things go. In the meantime, I look forward to flying into Quantum Rise!

When mining for the first time since QR was introduced, I discovered a welcome but undocumented change. The strip miner modules now have a timer that allows me to see when they’re due to finish their 180-second cycle. This makes it easier to manage the ‘dragging’ from the hold to the can – making it easier for those of us who mine while reading/cooking/websurfing. A definite plus.
The other stuff you listed above? I haven’t had to deal with any of that yet.

Actually, I believe that is documented.

Yes the cycle timer was in there albiet mentioned very briefly. It only occured to me this morning how useful it would be for strip miners, not just in knowing when you’d get the next ore deposit in your hold but, more importantly for me, when there is just a partial cycle’s worth of ore left in the roid. It will now be a great deal easier to judge when the roid is empty to cut the strip off and start it again on the next one.
I may have misinterpreted what you meant on the “alchemy” conversion but this applies only to moon minerals and not normal ore minerals.
The certficates are interesting and a useful tool for corp recruitment but for me have a few flaws. For example the need for high levels in the armour compensation skills for the elite armour tanking cert. These skills are pointless and a general waste of valuable skillpoints imho. But despite that still a nice addition and facilitate the bragging rights somewhat!
I think the web nerf was to stop them being even more powerful after the general ship speed reduction. But bear in mind that the range is now also variable so you can now web from more than 10kms without the billions of ISK needed for the Officer versions.
I am also looking forward to being to change the ammo type in all turrets in just a couple of clicks instead of 2 per turret.
And cloaking haulers ftw! I went to buy a Viator last night only to see the price has rocketed and only 2 left in the whole region at crazy prices! I expect the same applies to cov ops cloaks which will be much more in demand now.
Nice article!
